Iceland, the captivating land of fire and ice, is on our bucket list. In this blog post, I’ll share our unforgettable experience visiting Iceland with our son. We were awestruck by its stunning landscapes. Lovie treated us to first-class comfort on Iceland Air, making travel a breeze. The flight was remarkably short. On landing, we had a slight challenge squeezing our bags into the rental car, but our Tetris skills prevailed. We arrived in Reykjavik after encountering the Icelandic passion for roundabouts. Finding parking for three adults with luggage proved difficult as we finally settled into our apartment rental.

Our trip to Iceland was less researched than usual. However, we stumbled upon mesmerizing sights and natural wonders. We took numerous car trips to fully immerse ourselves in Iceland’s beauty. We were met with awe-inspiring landscapes, volcanic terrains, majestic waterfalls, and the renowned Northern Lights. We ventured to popular tourist attractions such as the breathtaking Seljalandsfosswaterfall, mesmerizing Reynisfjara Beach, and the intriguing Sir Geysir. From a safe distance, I captured the perfect blast of the Geysir. The guys were in the splash zone. We carried on to the extraordinary Gullfoss waterfall. All of these locations offered their own uniqueness and left us in utter awe of Iceland’s natural beauty.

Reykjavik Apartment Hotel proved to be a hidden gem, boasting two bedrooms, a bathroom, a living room, and a fully functional kitchen. The fridge had complimentary provisions including milk, orange juice, tea, cereal, and coffee pods. The kitchen was fully stocked with crockery and utensils. There was also a washer and dryer in the unit. We signed up for breakfast, which was a delightful basket filled with eggs, bread, cheese, ham, cream cheese, fruit, and yogurt. The following morning greeted us with freshly baked bread hanging on our doorknob. It was a convenient service. Our first meal was at a nearby fish and chips eatery. Lovie then moved the car closer to our apartment. Reykjavik’s hilly terrain proved a bit challenging, especially for someone unfit like myself who struggled with exhaustion. I need to work on my fitness for future visits.
What struck me most during our trip was the distinct culture and friendliness of the Icelandic people. Their profound connection to their past resonated through their traditions and food. They seem enamored with 1980s music. We even dared to try some traditional Icelandic dishes, although I played it safe to avoid inconvenient digestive issues. One charming Icelandic restaurant we visited was Cafe Loki, where Lovie indulged in a dish called Plockkfiskur and couldn’t help but order it on three separate occasions. I enjoyed a delicious lamb soup, while our son tried Baldur, a plate featuring a small Plockkfiskur and rye bread with herring. As our vacation drew to a close, we dined at Rauða Húsið Restaurant in Eyrarbakki. Lovie savored a langoustine dinner. I opted for mushroom soup, realizing that my excitement for food had dried up. We couldn’t resist trying the Icelandic favorite of rye bread ice cream, and it did not disappoint. Unfortunately, we missed out on visiting the famous hotdog stand called Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur, perhaps an adventure for our next visit.

The guys convinced me to experience one of Iceland’s luxurious spas. I mustered up the courage to immerse myself in the lagoon and partake in the seven-part ritual. We opted to use Sky Lagoon in Reykjavik, a place of pure magic. The infinity hot pool with a bar in the water allowed us to relax and enjoy drinks while gazing at the stunning ocean views. We even caught a glimpse of a volcano, although I can’t recall which one. It was a truly awe-inspiring sight.

And then there was the highlight of our trip: the Northern Lights. Lovie conducted thorough research, leading us to the perfect viewing spot. Boy and I forgot to bundle up with enough warm layers but we braved the cold for a few hours before retreating to the car to warm up. The sight was magnificent, with the lights dancing and undulating across the sky in vibrant shades of green and purple. Witnessing this phenomenon was a dream come true, and I can honestly say it exceeded my expectations. We plan to return to that viewing area on our next visit.

Iceland is a remarkable destination, perfect for adventurers seeking the marvels of nature. The landscapes are breathtaking. The culture will immerse you in a unique experience. We plan to return to Iceland. We want to explore more of this beautiful country. It was a memorable trip. Lovie really spoilt us again.
